DENIS SAWYER

Lawyer

Denis comes to Grande Prairie from New Brunswick where he practiced primarily in the fields of Criminal Law and Civil Litigation. He is a former Federal Prosecutor and as such has gained significant court experience at all levels of litigation. As a litigator, Denis has appeared in and had success in the Provincial Court and the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta. Denis has also appeared in the Court of Appeal in the Province of New Brunswick.  Denis continues to advise other members of the firm in the areas of Criminal Law. Also, Denis continues to appear regularly in Traffic court both as a prosecutor for the City and County of Grande Prairie and as counsel for traffic matters.

 

In most recent years Denis has shifted his practice to aide clients primarily in Real Estate, Wills and Estates, and Corporate/Commercial along with maintaining a General Civil Litigation practice.


Since relocating to Grande Prairie, Denis has been active in the community serving by serving on several local boards. Of interest, Denis is currently a board member with the Odyssey House which is a non-profit organization and registered charity. This organization provides a safe, secure, and supportive accommodation for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence. Furthermore, Denis is a long time Board member of the ACFA, an organization serving and promoting the French language in the Province.


In his spare time Denis can likely be found either coaching Baseball or on his motorcycle.

Denis has practiced law in Grande Prairie since 2012 and his practice now primarily focuses on General Litigation, Traffic, Real Estate, and Municipal law. Denis is also fully bilingual and can assist clients in French.

General Civil Litigation

Denis assists Grande Prairie and area residents through complicated procedures and lengthy processes to ensure the best steps are taken to winning their case in Court. He brings several advantages to litigation matters as a result of being lead counsel on both Criminal and Civil matters. As a result of his past experiences, Denis understands the complexities of matters prior to bringing same to trial. As a general litigator, Denis continues to build his practice to include a variety of topics ranging from Civil Claims to Commercial disputes.  He appears regularly in the Court of Queen’s Bench, Provincial Court and Commissioners Court to protect what’s yours and pursue what you are owed. 

In the past Denis has even given lectures to local groups regarding issues pertaining a wide variety of topics. Denis has also volunteered his time to the Local Legal Guidance Center aiding individuals who cannot afford a lawyer. 

Traffic

Denis has been approached by many Grande Prairie residents and businesses to assist them with their traffic matters. As a former Federal Crown, Denis advises his clients in situations where National Safety Code points are also attached to infractions. Given his insight and relationships founded in his previous role, he can often resolve a matter limiting a person’s and or company’s exposure to such points.

For example, a conviction under the Traffic Safety Act can result in a fine up to $2000 or a six month jail sentence. Denis has helped resolved fines and outstanding traffic tickets in a fair and prompt manner. He’s also assisted clients in avoiding suspensions and demerits and continues to advise the same on an ongoing basis. Hiring Denis to appear for you means that you likely will not have to attend court in order to resolve your traffic matter. Denis is also happy to run trials in regards to traffic offences.

Real Estate (Residential and Commercial)

Denis has assisted many Grande Prairie residents with their purchases, sales or refinancing of their residential properties. Denis particularly enjoys aiding first time home buyers

Denis has and continues to assist a number of corporate clients regarding leasing and purchasing of new land including refinancing.

Municipal

Denis has been prosecuting matters on behalf of the City and County of Grande Prairie since 2012. Denis advises both the City and County of Grande Prairie on enforcement matters. He is often call upon to provide legal advice to these neighboring municipalities regarding their by-laws as well as other municipal issues.

Denis’ community work includes but is not limited to the following;

·      Former Board Member of the Grande Prairie Minor Baseball Association

·      Denis enjoys sports (particularly coaching and playing baseball) and spending time with his wife and young puppy.
