John was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1996 and the Saskatchewan Bar in 2019. He was born in Brooks, Alberta and attended the University of Lethbridge for three years before embarking on an LL.B. from the University of Calgary. He received his LL.B. from Calgary in 1995. John articled with Stringam Denecky and upon completing articles joined Stringam Denecky as an Associate Lawyer. In 2016 Stringam Denecky merged with SGB Law to become Stringam LLP.
John was the managing partner of Stringam Denecky and is the managing partner of Stringam LLP. His vision and relentless focus on the ‘business of law’ over the last decade has allowed the firm to develop a long term, market-based strategy in becoming the largest regional law firm in Alberta. John was awarded a Queen’s Counsel designation in March 2020.

John has developed extensive experience and skill as a high conflict litigator in divorce and family law matters, including the issues of custody and access, and division of matrimonial/relationship property. John has gained significant expertise in representing high net worth clients. which includes handling complicated asset divisions and tackling complex income scenarios.
John deals with complicated estate & asset disputes both before and after the death of a loved one. Prior to death, estate litigation can include, but is not limited to, handling claims respecting the use of powers of attorney, assessing the validity of wills and trust planning, and dealing with loss of capacity issues through court applications. After death, disputes may arise when a family member is disinherited or receives less than what is thought fair or when there are challenges made to wills and trusts.
If your business is experiencing issues with shareholders, John has a great deal of experience in resolving corporate issues both outside and inside of court. From corporate and business assets to unanimous shareholder agreements (USA’s), John deals with complex business structures. John also has experience in the resolution of corporate governance issues.
John regularly appears at all levels of Court in Alberta; Provincial Court, Court of Queen’s Bench and Court of Appeal. He also regularly appears in the Court of Queen’s Bench and Provincial Court in Saskatchewan. John has appeared at the Superior Courts of Ontario, as well as the Federal Court of Canada and the Federal Tax Court of Canada.
