Matt was born in Lethbridge, Alberta but moved to Calgary when he was young. He later returned to Lethbridge where he earned his B.A in English, with distinction, from the University of Lethbridge in 2014.
In 2018, Matt earned his J.D. from the University of Calgary. He recently joined Stringam LLP as an articling student in our Lethbridge office and hopes to be admitted to the Alberta Bar in 2019.
During his final year of law school, Matt was the co-editor-in-chief for the Alberta Law Review at the University of Calgary. Matt oversaw the organization, supervised a team of editors, and helped prepare an issue of the Law Review for publication. Matt also held a research assistant’s position for the N. Murray Edwards Chair of Business Law. As a result of this position, Matt was able to gain experience interpreting and drafting shareholders’ agreements. He also analysed numerous small business issues and structural concerns during his tenure in this position.
While in law school Matt also completed an independent study on the legal and financial viability of new, socially conscious benefit corporations. Matt also drafted and revised several estate plans focused on charitable giving, intergenerational transfers of farm property, and farm succession. He also worked on advances in technology related to law, including cyber-security, artificial general intelligence, block-chain, and cryptocurrency.
Matt’s interests and experience have pushed him towards business law, agricultural law, estates, and family law, but he intends to maintain a general practice focusing on a number of different areas.
Matt enjoys being active in his free time. Matt has played hockey almost all of his life, including, most recently, on one of the law school teams at the University of Calgary, and for several intramural and work-related teams in Lethbridge. Matt and several members of his family have made it an annual event to compete in the Moonlight Run; however, Matt is still looking to post a better time than his dad and uncle who have beaten him the last few years.
Matt is also an avid writer and editor whose focus the past few years has been on non-fiction, but he intends to complete a novel he has been working on for a number of years. Matt also hopes to become an active member of the community. Matt has prior experience in education and tutoring and intends to use those skills to contribute to the already vibrant education community in Lethbridge.
