John was born and raised in Brooks, Alberta. He attended the University of Lethbridge before earning his LL.B. from the University of Calgary in 1995. After law school, he articled with Stringam and later became Managing Partner, a role he held from 2008 to 2022. He served as Chair of the Stringam LLP Board in 2022, 2023, and 2024. John was appointed King’s Counsel in March 2020 and, in the same year, was named by the Minister of Justice to the Provincial Court Nominating Committee (now the Alberta Judicial Nominating Committee), where he served until April 2026. In March 2025, he was appointed by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta as a Commissioner to the 2025–2026 Electoral Boundaries Commission, and later in 2025 he was appointed by the Law Society of Alberta as a Bencher.
John’s practice focuses on high‑conflict litigation, including estate disputes, family law matters, corporate shareholder disputes, construction claims, and professional negligence cases for both plaintiffs and defendants. He has successfully appeared at all levels of court in Alberta, as well as before the Court of King’s Bench in Saskatchewan, the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and the Federal Court. Based in Stringam’s Lethbridge office, John represents clients throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories, both in person and virtually. He has been called to the bar in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories and is a member of the law societies in each jurisdiction.
Outside the office, John enjoys spending time with his wife and family, volunteering with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and pursuing road cycling, mountain biking, CrossFit, and hunting upland game birds with his Braque Français hunting dog, Ozzy.
