We recognize that our firm can’t operate without our professional support staff. Whether that’s recruitment, marketing, or administrative support, every member of our staff plays a key role in ensuring our offices are run smoothly and efficiently.
We recommend students applying to our articling program to include the following information upon initial application. Doing so will ensure that the members of our Articling Committee receive all of the relevant information necessary to assess each application on its merits.
The cover letter acts as a first impression and is often the most memorable piece of the application. The impression a cover letter can leave is often the difference between just an interview or an offer. Many interviewers will see the cover letter as the student’s first writing sample, so it is imperative that the letter be flawless.
Take the time to be clear and concise in your letter, providing introductory information, what your interests are, why you feel you are suited for our firm including any qualities or achievements you feel support that position. When addressing your letter, describe why you are interested in our firm, making references to what is unique about our firm. This demonstrates why we should be interested in you as a student. Be sure to limit your cover letter to one page and remember to address it to the correct person.
A resume is your calling card and should tell us almost everything we need to know about you. It should give us enough information about why we would want to hire you including what experience you bring to our firm.
Always try to write a resume which reflects on the experience you feel will have value to our particular practice. Focus on the experience which is most relevant to the position and consider only including that experience. Keep your resume to a minimum of two pages if possible. Try not to include every possible detail of experience if your resume is likely to exceed the two page limit.
Your resume should be error free. As with a cover letter, resumes are often looked to as writing samples and so expect it will be considered as such. Format your resume to at least include:
Students may wish to also include a list of references highlighting the student’s particular abilities. These should be listed at the end of your resume including the references’ contact information. For those students with actual reference letters, include these where appropriate at the end of the articling application. When including actual reference letters, give consideration to whether they actually speak to your specific unique abilities or if they are generic – which does not add much value.
Writing samples are generally not read simply due to the fact that the recruitment process is so time consuming. Only include writing samples if they are specifically requested.
Students should include all post-secondary transcripts. If there are significant gaps in your education, including an explanation in a cover letter will provide valuable context to the interviewer.
