KURT E. SCHLACHTER, KC

Kurt was appointed our firm’s first Chief Executive Officer in January of 2023. In this role, he is responsible for managing all aspects of the firm’s business operations and assets. He is also responsible for developing and executing the firm’s strategic plan within the context of its operating and capital budgets. His vision is to significantly grow the Stringam brand through a combination of sustained organic growth and strategic mergers and acquisitions, and to develop a firm culture that is consistent with this vision while enhancing employee satisfaction and ensuring the delivery of high calibre client service across the firm’s markets.

Kurt grew up on a family farm near Bow Island, Alberta. He earned a B.Sc.(Hons) in Neuroscience from the University of Lethbridge in 2000, followed by a J.D. from the University of Saskatchewan in 2003. After graduating from law school, Kurt articled at Stringam and continued on to become a partner in 2010, and then Regional Managing Partner for the Lethbridge region in 2016.

Throughout his legal career, Kurt has gained a broad exposure to several practice areas, including divorce and family law, civil litigation, personal injury, employment law, real estate, wills and estates, corporate/commercial, and criminal matters.

Kurt believes strongly in the importance of both getting involved with and giving back to one’s community, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Downtown Lethbridge BRZ, and the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta. He is the Past President and Chair of the Board of Directors of Economic Development Lethbridge, is a retired member of the University of Lethbridge Senate, and served as Chair of the University of Lethbridge Board of Governors from 2016 to 2022. Kurt is also a philanthropist, and has personally supported many different pillars of the Lethbridge and area community, including the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation, Lethbridge College, the University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge Family Services, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, as well as a number of other charities. In 2023, Kurt and his spouse established a first of its kind endowment funds to support 2SLGBTQ+ students at the University of Lethbridge.

Kurt’s passion for excellence in governance culminated in him obtaining the prestigious ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors and Rotman School of Business at the University of Toronto in July of 2020. He is currently a corporate director with the University of Lethbridge Business Corporation.

In December of 2015, Kurt was named one of Lethbridge’s Top 40 Under 40 by the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce. In September of 2017, he was honoured to be given the traditional Blackfoot name, Stamiksiiitoohkitapoyii – Bull Buffalo Standing on the Hill, by the FMNI Chapter of the University of Lethbridge Alumni Association. Kurt was appointed King’s Counsel in 2022, and in 2024 was awarded a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, by the University of Lethbridge in recognition of his dedication to community building.
